Why Your Skin Barrier Matters

Why Your Skin Barrier Matters

Let's Talk About Your Skin Barrier

“Skin barrier” has become one of those skincare phrases we hear everywhere.

Protect your barrier.

Repair your barrier.

Don't damage your barrier.

But what exactly is it?

In simple terms, your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin. One of its most important jobs is helping keep moisture in while protecting your skin from the outside environment.

And when it's happy?

Your skin tends to feel comfortable, smooth, and hydrated.

When it's not?

Your skin will usually let you know.

Sometimes More Skincare Isn't the Answer

This is something I've seen over and over again as an esthetician.

Someone isn't happy with their skin, so naturally they add another product.

Then another.

An exfoliating toner.

An acid.

A retinol.

A scrub.

A new serum they saw online.

Suddenly their skincare routine has become a chemistry experiment. 😂

And their skin looks worse.

When skin feels dry, tight, flaky, sensitive, or uncomfortable, sometimes the answer isn't finding another active ingredient.

Sometimes the answer is backing off.

What Can Disrupt Your Skin Barrier?

There isn't one single cause.

Over-exfoliating is a big one.

Using too many strong active ingredients at the same time can also become problematic, particularly when your skin hasn't had time to adjust.

But it can be simpler than that.

Very hot water.

Harsh cleansing.

Dry weather.

Sun exposure.

Not moisturizing appropriately.

Even constantly switching products because you're trying every new thing you see on social media.

This is why I don't believe a complicated skincare routine is automatically a better skincare routine.

Your skin doesn't care how many products are sitting on your bathroom counter.

Signs Your Skin May Need a Little TLC

Your skin barrier isn't something I want you diagnosing in the bathroom mirror. But there are certainly signs that your skin may be feeling stressed.

You might notice:

  • Dryness or flaking
  • Tightness
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Redness
  • Rough texture
  • Products that suddenly sting or feel uncomfortable
  • Skin that just feels...off

If your skin changes significantly, becomes painful, or you're dealing with a persistent skin condition, that's when I want you talking with a dermatologist rather than trying another TikTok skincare hack.

My Favorite Advice: Simplify

When someone's skin is feeling overwhelmed, I don't immediately think:

What can we add?

I think:

What can we take away?

Go back to basics.

A gentle cleanser.

A good moisturizer.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF.

Then give your skin a chance to settle before piling everything back on.

Once things feel comfortable again, targeted treatments can be introduced thoughtfully, depending on your skin and your goals.

Skincare isn't a race.

Moisture Matters

A good moisturizer isn't necessarily the most glamorous product in your routine, but it's one I don't want you overlooking.

Moisturizers can help support hydration and reduce water loss from the skin.

And just like everything else in skincare, the right moisturizer depends on your skin.

A rich cream that feels incredible on dry skin might feel far too heavy for someone else.

Someone with oily skin may prefer a lighter texture.

There isn't one perfect moisturizer.

There's a moisturizer that's appropriate for you.

Please Stop Scrubbing Your Face Into Submission 😂

We need to talk about exfoliation.

I love exfoliation when it's appropriate.

But somehow we've gotten the idea that if a little exfoliation is good, more must be better.

It isn't.

You do not need to attack your skin.

And you definitely don't need to use multiple exfoliating products every day simply because they're sitting in your cabinet.

If your skin is already feeling irritated, adding another scrub or acid isn't necessarily going to “get rid of” the problem.

Sometimes you're just making angry skin angrier.

What About Retinol and Other Actives?

I love active skincare ingredients.

But I also respect them.

Retinoids, exfoliating acids, vitamin C formulations, and other targeted treatments can absolutely have a place in a well-designed skincare routine.

That doesn't mean you need all of them.

And it certainly doesn't mean you need to start all of them on the same Tuesday. 😂

Introduce active products intentionally.

Follow the manufacturer's directions.

Pay attention to how your skin responds.

And if you're unsure, ask a qualified skincare professional.

SPF Is Part of Barrier Care Too

I know.

Here comes the esthetician telling you to wear sunscreen again. 😂

But daily sun protection is one of the most important things you can do for your skin.

Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and don't save it for beach days.

If you're investing time and money into taking care of your skin, protecting it from UV exposure needs to be part of the conversation.

Your Skin Doesn't Need Every Trend

This might be one of the biggest lessons I want to bring to Sienna Wellness Co.

I don't want you buying something because the internet convinced you that your routine is incomplete without it.

I want you to understand why you're using it.

What does it do?

Does your skin need it?

Does it work with the rest of your routine?

Will you actually use it?

And most importantly:

Has it earned its place?

That's the standard I want for the products I eventually bring into SKIN, too.

Not what's trending this week.

What's actually worth putting on your skin.

Sometimes the Best Skincare Move Is Doing Less

We tend to think taking better care of ourselves means doing more.

More products.

More treatments.

More steps.

But skincare has taught me that sometimes taking care of yourself means recognizing when you've already done enough.

Cleanse gently.

Moisturize.

Protect your skin from the sun.

Choose treatments intentionally.

And give your skin some time to simply be skin.

Take care of yourself. You deserve it. 🤍

With love,
Sienna
